Solid-State Lithium UPS Targets AI Data Center Power Density

Ampace has launched the PU200, a semi-solid-state lithium battery system designed specifically for UPS applications in high-density AI data centers. The announcement was made during the Datacloud Global Congress in Cannes, where the company presented a solution aimed at handling the extreme power fluctuations generated by GPU-intensive computing clusters.

According to European industry data, regional data center power demand is expected to exceed 10 GW by the end of 2026. AI training and inference workloads create rapid, high-magnitude load changes that traditional lead-acid and conventional lithium-ion UPS systems struggle to support safely. Under peak GPU loads, conventional lithium-ion batteries face increased thermal runaway risk, higher fire protection costs, and shorter service life.

The PU200 uses a semi-solid-state electrolyte architecture that reduces flammable gas release during thermal runaway conditions by 58% compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries. The system supports both short-duration high-power pulse discharge and long-duration backup modes, making it suitable for AI workloads that require both voltage stability and extended runtime.

James Li, UPS Data Center Division Director at Ampace, stated that future UPS batteries will no longer act only as backup power sources, but as core energy management units capable of integrating with grid power, solar storage, and peak-shaving systems. The product has already completed pilot deployments at several hyperscale AI data centers in North America and Europe, with mass commercial availability scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Market research firm Lucintel estimates that the global lithium-ion UPS battery market will grow from USD 5.52 billion in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate of 40.3% through 2032, with AI infrastructure as the largest driver of demand.
